Vines were grown for the quality and flavour of their grapes. Of course much interest was given over to wine making - nourishing and beautifying life!

The metaphor to convey, the purpose and meaning Israel was the Vine - a staple for living well. Living Well meant covenant relationship with God, to be a blessing to all - Righteousness and an inspiration to which all people would be drawn - Justice. The same metaphor Jesus uses to inspire His followers.

Jesus is moving centre stage and to His "enthronement" on a Cross crowned with Thorns. His seventh sign, the raising of the dead man Lazurus, his name means "God helps"! completes the proclamation of Light coming into the world.

The rest of John's Gospel shares how the Light Is full of grace and truth - God's glory. Raising Lazurus, in this Bethany "House of bitterness", is the sign that He, the Divine Word, brings life, to that which is well and truly stinking dead. The hardest test of all - the redemption of a sinful creation - stinking in its dead state" but tetalesthai! It will be accomplished..

Christians are called to be distinctive. We are not only a community but also a family and a working team - we are called for a purpose outside of ourselves. Our distinctiveness is seen and experienced in our attitudes and the way that we conduct ourselves. Our calling is to make real the character and effectiveness of the Love and presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, made real through us in the world. Jesus, by His spirit, present and active!

It’s right in front of you but you just can’t make it work or even work it out.

If that’s the case for simple things like self-assembly furniture, then surely it must be impossible for us to even begin to understand God? Well, we might think that but that’s not the case.

In today’s passage, we are encouraged to pray – for prayer brings revelation. We can see and understand the nature of God and our relationship with Him. It helps us as we explore those big questions of life - identity, purpose and belonging.
